Planting 2,500 trees and shrubs at Lansallos

Twice a year, volunteers plant thousands of native trees and shrubs in the Capertee Valley to assist the recovery of the endangered Regent Honeyeater bird.  This time the planting was at Lansallos B&B and 2,500 plants were planted.

The volunteers come from many different places, mainly Sydney area and occasionally overseas visitor. The last couple of plantings a group, Friends of Taronga Zoo, arrive in a large tourist coach.

Plants cartage and watering is taken care of by A Sydney Landrover Club.

Echidna near Lansallos

We found this echidna on the road outside our property.  Usually they just 'hide' by sticking their heads between their front legs so that you cannot see their faces.

Butterflys

Today hundreds of butterflys swarmed in our front door area.

Moths

These moths were attracted by the outdoor light in the parking area.

Eucalypt blossom at Lansallos

Our plants regularly act as host to insects in great numbers but the plant seems to cope with it without much effort.  Maybe someone can identify these bugs.
This tree is near the house and many varieties of birds are feeding on the nectar in the blossom.

Beardred Dragon at Lansallos

Handsome and harmless, the bearded dragon is a frequent visitor.  This fellow was about 20 inches long.

Flowering at Lansallos

Right now, the Banksias are performing well, each flower is about 25 cm long  (10 inched ) and last a long time.  Even when they are done, the flower heads look artistic .

One of our Kookaburras

An Aussie icon, the laughing Kookaburra, known by every Australian.  They are regularly seen sitting in a high spot (top of electric pole or wire, large tree) scanning the surroundings for whatever may constitute a bit of a feed.

At Lansallos, they have been known to fly into closed windows, makes a very loud bang and leaves the poor Kookaburra stunned for a while.

A nocturnal visitor to Lansallos

Frogs are frequent visitors during the summer months when  insects are attracted by inside lights.  This in turn attracts frogs who attach themselves to the window glass and eat the insects.

One visitor has seen the endangered Regent Honey eater in one of the trees close to the house and there has been numerous sightings in the Capertee Valley together with other endangered species.

Meet the local kangaroos at Lansallos

Once the local kangroos get used to a new car around the house, it is not uncommon for them to browse around the house at night.  On this occasions, I surprised a family of 6 or 8 outside our bedroom early in the morning.  

The variety here is Eastern Greys
